Tracking Horse Tack: Protecting Saddles & Equipment From Theft
3 June 2026 · 5 min read
Ask any yard owner and they'll tell you: tack theft is relentless. Saddles are the prize — compact, valuable, in constant demand on the second-hand market and almost impossible to identify once they've changed hands. A single raid on a tack room can take thousands of pounds of kit in one go. Covert tracking, plus a proper record of what you own, turns your tack from an easy target into a recoverable asset.
Why tack is a thief's favourite
- Saddles hold their value and sell quickly online and at sales.
- Tack rooms are often in isolated yards with light security.
- Most tack has no obvious unique identifier once a maker's label is removed.
- Insurers frequently ask for proof of ownership and value that owners simply don't have to hand.
Tagging tack discreetly
Tack needs tags that hide and survive everyday use:
- SpacePaper — thin enough to tuck under a saddle flap, behind a panel or inside a numnah pocket without being felt.
- Irregular Heat-Shrink — a tough capsule that conceals in a rug, trailer fitting or the lining of a tack trunk for years.
- Tag the tack room and trailer too — a tag on the trunk itself tells you the moment the whole lot moves.
Tip — Tag your everyday saddle and your competition saddle separately, and photograph the maker's stamp and serial number while you're at it.
Build an insurance-ready record
For each item, store its make, model, serial number, a photo and its value in Localizit. If you ever claim — or need to prove a recovered saddle is yours — you have everything in one place. It also makes renewing the right level of cover far easier, because you know exactly what your tack is worth.
Geofence, alert, recover
Set a geofence around the yard so you're alerted if tagged tack leaves after hours. If something is taken, use the live map to locate it, report it with your crime reference, and share a secure live link with the police rather than approaching anyone yourself. Tracking finds it; your record proves it's yours.
Whether it's a five-figure dressage saddle or a yard full of shared kit, a few small tags and a tidy register mean a theft no longer has to mean a permanent loss.
