Plant & Machinery Tracking: How UK Firms Protect Diggers, Dumpers and Attachments
18 July 2026 · 7 min read
Plant theft is organised, quick and expensive: machines lifted onto low-loaders at night, attachments walking off site mid-week, and recovery rates that make grim reading. The machines that do come back usually come back for one reason — someone could show the police where they were. That's a tracking problem, and it has a layered answer.
Layer one: GPS on self-propelled plant
Anything with an engine and four-figure value justifies a wired or battery GPS tracker: excavators, dumpers, telehandlers, generators. Live location, movement alerts outside working hours, and a breadcrumb trail when a machine leaves site on someone else's trailer. Wire-in units draw from the machine battery; magnetic battery units suit hired-in or short-stay kit.
Layer two: covert BLE tags on attachments and hand-off kit
Buckets, breakers, augers, compaction plates, laser levels — attachments are stolen more often than machines, are rarely individually protected, and are almost never recovered. A covert BLE crowd-tag hidden in an attachment costs a fraction of GPS, has no monthly fee, and turns 'gone forever' into 'last seen here, moving this way'.
Geofence the site, not just the machine
Draw a geofence around the compound and let the platform do the night shift: anything tagged that leaves the boundary out of hours raises an alert with a location attached. It's the difference between discovering a theft at 7am and interrupting one at 2am.
Make recovery someone's job in the first hour
- Alert fires — confirm it's not a legitimate late movement
- Open the live map and location history
- Report to police with the crime reference
- Share the live tracking link with the responding officers
- Notify your insurer with the evidence trail attached
Tip — Keep a simple asset register alongside the tags — serials, photos, plant IDs. Recovery and insurance both move faster when the paperwork exists before the theft.
Localizit runs both layers in one platform — GPS units and covert BLE tags on a single map, with geofencing, alerts and police-shareable recovery links. See supported trackers or talk to us about covering a site.
