Construction Site Theft: How to Protect Plant, Tools and Kit

Construction sites are, by design, open, changing and full of valuable, portable kit — which is exactly why they're a magnet for theft. Most losses happen out of hours, from the same compounds, to the same targets: mini-excavators and dumpers, generators and compressors, and the vans and tool chests full of power tools. Fencing and lighting help, but the kit that comes back is the kit you can still locate.

Secure the compound, not just the gate

• One lockable compound for high-value plant and tools, not scattered storage.
• Lighting and cameras on the approach — thieves prefer the dark and the unwatched.
• Immobilise plant and remove keys; don't leave machines fuelled and ready to drive off.
• A sign-out habit so you know what's on site, and what left with whom.

Track what's worth stealing
